DESCRIPTION:Flying Tigers\nA film by Madhusree Dutta\n105 minutes | 2026 |
 Bengali\, English\, Mandarin\, German with English subtitles\nAbout the Fi

s / Tiger is Coming. The film traces various renditions of flying tiger by

ly shifts between lenses and perspectives\, and slides across locations.\n

DESCRIPTION:About the Festival\nPLAYINTERPLAY is a theatre festival with a
difference. It celebrates 50 years of the Inlaks Shivdasani Foundation\,
bringing together its theatre awardees and scholars to show their work\, s
hare their experiences\, skills and learnings\, and converse on matters of
common interest.\nPLAYINTERPLAY presents plays that are new to Bengaluru
. What is different\, however\, is that it looks back as well as forward\,
featuring a work of theatre that has been specially revived for the festi
val and readings of plays that are still to become the finished article.\n
PLAYINTERPLAY does more: it forges connections between its constituent pa
rts — performances\, workshops\, conversations and experience sharing
 — emphasising the interplay between thought\, learning and practice.\nSe
e the plays! Apply for the workshops! Join the conversations! Soak in the
 magic of theatre.\n-------------------------------------------------------

-------------------------------\nAbout the Inlaks Theatre Awardees’ Show
case\nHeld every year since 2023\, the Inlaks Theatre Showcase offers a pl
atform for the recipients of the theatre opportunities of that particular
year to present their work and connect with the Inlaks theatre alumni comm
unity. This year’s showcase\, featuring the presentations of the three 2
026 theatre awardees\, has been directed by 2016 Inlaks theatre awardee Ki
 yomi Mehta.\n-------------------------------------------------------------
 -------------\nEk Mulaqat Manto Se\nLanguage: Hindi\, Urdu\nDirected and
performed by: Ashwath Bhatt\nAbout the Performance\nSaadat Hasan Manto is
an Indo-Pakistani writer known for his irreverent and controversial writin
 g. Hailed as one of Urdu's finest writers\, he held up a mirror to society
\, especially in ugly times. The performance is based on Manto’s article
s and explores his life and times\, and the social changes he witnessed at
the time of India’s Partition. Ashwath Bhatt plays Manto\, who engages
with the audience in trying to answer the larger question\, “Why I write
what I write”. The Manto that Ashwath plays\, decodes the enigma and id
iosyncrasies of Manto. Correlating his writing with the political climate
of the time\, this performance follows the writer as he contemplates his j
ourney\, changing mindsets\, family life and poetry.\nFor enquiries please

DESCRIPTION:The World in the Body: Observe. Absorb. Create.\nA Workshop by
Tushar Pandey\nThis workshop explores the immense possibilities of the per
former’s body and mind\, and the relationship between the body\, space a
nd the world around us. Through observation\, physical exploration and pla
y\, participants will draw from the rhythms\, movements\, textures and dyn
amics of nature\, objects\, people and spaces\, allowing these external in
fluences to become internal impulses and material for performance.\nThe wo
rk moves between the external and the internal: what moves us\, what creat
es an impulse\, and how physical sensation can lead to emotion\, sound\, w
ords and eventually images.\nImagination and physicality become tools for
exploring different theatrical languages\, from realistic text and dramati
c composition to epic storytelling and grotesque or comic worlds.\nFor enq

DESCRIPTION:Bhima\nLanguage: English\nDevised and performed by: Vivek Vijay
akumaran and Sachin Gurjale\nDirected by: Anitha Santhanam\nDrawing inspir
ation from Ashok Malhotra’s Child Man\, MT Vasudevan Nair’s Randamoozh
am\, and Jeanette Winterson’s Weight\, this play explores the paradoxes
and ironies in the life of the second Pandava\, Bhima.\nWho is Bhima? What
is his hunger? Who feeds it? What are the choices available to a hero? Wh
at is the fate of a strong man in contemporary times? These are some of th
e questions around which the key narrative of the play evolves. What is hi
s relevance to contemporary life? Would his version of masculinity be acce
ptable in today’s world?\nIf Bhima were to live today\, who would he be
 — a loyal middle-management warrior who is the engine of the company but
never its CEO? A family man who defines himself only in terms of roles
 — the breadwinner\, the husband\, the son — who will do anything for h
is family? Or does he exist as an individual beyond these roles? Does soci
ety look after its Bhimas\, or is it only Arjuna we want?\nContrasting the
Koodiyattam form with contemporary dialogue and commentary\, using music
and poetry as interventions\, Bhima re-examines a version of masculinity
and its interaction with modernity.\nBhima won the Best Innovative Sound
Design award for Sachin Gurjale at the 2017 Mahindra Excellence in Theatre
Awards (META).\nFor enquiries please contact 50yearsofinlaks@gmail.com

DESCRIPTION:Physical Theatre: Its Possibilities and Limits\nA Conversation
with Tushar Pandey\, Ashwath Bhatt and Vivek Vijayakumaran\nModerated by A
nmol Vellani\nPhysical theatre communicates primarily\, though not solely\
, through the language of gestures\, facial expressions and movement. The
exception is mime\, which is non-verbal by definition.\nIn this session\,
three theatre artists will speak about what attracted them to physical the
atre and describe the nature of their involvement in the teaching and prac
tice of this stylised form of performance. As their work as directors and
actors has also extended beyond physical theatre\, they will reflect on th
e reasons for their divergent artistic choices.\nPhysical theatre has many
strengths. Most notably\, it can overcome language barriers\, express wha
t words cannot\, connect with audiences at a visceral level\, harness the
ideas and creativity of the whole group\, and rely on minimalist scenograp
hy. But equally\, it is constrained by the very characteristics that set i
t apart from other theatre styles. This session will conclude with a discu
ssion on the limits of physical theatre and the creative strategies that c
an prevent style from overshadowing substance.\nFor enquiries please conta

s to during the war remains with him. He begins to narrate the tale of the
war again — only this time\, the tale is replete with events and detail
s that he chose not to reveal during the war.\nThe play explores the follo
wing questions: What do we see but do not say? What stops us from speaking
? What do we carry to our deathbeds? What does it mean to be a witness?\nM
irage will be presented as a dramatic reading and incorporate elements of
clowning.\nThe play reading will be followed by a discussion between the p
laywright\, actors and  the audience.\nFor enquiries please contact: 50ye

th an outer neutral persona\, we will work our way towards the ridiculous
and then the grotesque.\nAt the end of the workshop\, participants will ga

DESCRIPTION:The Death of Galileo\nLanguage: Hindi\nDirected by Rajkumar Raj
ak\nAbout the Performance:\nThis play is an adaptation of Bertolt Brecht
’s Life of Galileo. Using a non-linear theatrical structure\, it connect
s Galileo’s struggle to contemporary realities.\nThe play unfolds at nig
ht inside a museum\, where a group arrives to demolish its collection of c
ultural and collective living memories and objects. Among the artefacts\,
they discover a telescope\, which becomes the point of departure for the s
tory of Galileo — his discoveries\, struggles\, confinement and unceasin
g search for truth. As the night progresses\, Galileo’s time and the pre
sent time begin to unfold simultaneously\, revealing parallels between soc
ial realities in two different historical moments.\nThe members of the dem
olition group are themselves caught between disillusionment\, violence and
self-deception. Their encounter with the museum and with Galileo stirs th
eir conscience\, and while one group remains adamant\, the other begins to
question its reasons for wanting to destroy the museum. An internal confl
ict begins\, between the path they’ve chosen\, to raze the museum for th
eir pride\, and the path their conscience wants to guide them towards. Exp
erimental music anchors the play in the present moment\, voicing the chara
cters' contradictions and a call to act for co-existence.\nThe performance
draws on Brecht’s distancing effect alongside character expression\, an
  actor-development process emerging from Rajkumar Rajak’s research.\nFor

DESCRIPTION:Writing Science Fiction Plays for the Indian Stage\nA Conversat
ion with Meghna Roy Choudhury and Abhishek Majumdar\nModerated by Anmol Ve
llani\nAfter reading excerpts from their science fiction plays\, two playw
rights will converse on the nature of science fiction\; why they chose to
write speculative plays for the Indian stage\; and whether they have been
inspired or influenced by earlier Indian plays and performances in this ge
nre. We will learn from them if writing science fiction for the theatre po
ses unique challenges. They will reference their own plays to demonstrate
that science fiction is not a form of free-floating fantasy\; it can\, for
instance\, address moral dilemmas and ask searching questions about the p
 olitical tendencies of our times.\nScript Reading:\nJuno 77\nBy Abhishek M
ajumdar\nIn Juno 77\, a woman disappears during a space mission. Her part
ner’s search takes him far beyond Earth\, where time unsettles everythin
g they believed they knew about love\, duty\, and family. When their paths
cross again\, each has lived differently and in different references of
time since the separation. How should they now understand their obligation
s to one another?\nAgainst this story\, Juno 77 asks questions at the he
art of moral philosophy. Does an intention matter more than its consequenc
es? Can someone be held to a promise in circumstances no one could have im
agined? What does it mean to forgive a person whose absence has shaped you
r entire life?\nThe play also considers how religion helps us live with su
ch questions. Faith offers ways to think about time\, sacrifice\, sufferin
g and the possibility of reunion. Yet those ideas can mean different thing
s to people who have endured the same loss differently. Bringing space sci
ence into conversation with religious thought\, Juno 77 asks how we make
moral choices when our shared understanding of a life has come apart.  I
t seeks to examine the question of whether our loves and losses are meani
ngful or mere coincidence.\nWritten and directed by Abhishek Majumdar\, th
e play will be produced by Nalanda Arts Studio in Kannada and Hindustani v
ersions.\nThe Archive on the Wall\nBy Meghna Roy Choudhury\nThe Archive on
the Wall is a science fiction play inspired by holographic principle theo
ry that explores memory\, scientific thought\, and political erasure\, set
inside a crumbling flat in contemporary Mumbai.\nAfter her mother’s dea
th\, Aparna\, a physicist turned archivist\, returns to her childhood home
to sort through her belongings. While scanning the old walls for data\, s
he discovers that one wall retains more than structural history. It reacts
. It hums. It remembers.\nAs the house approaches demolition\, Aparna unco
vers fragments of her mother’s political past\, her own repressed memori
es\, and traces of violence that were meant to disappear. She must confron
t what the wall has preserved and what she has chosen to forget.\nThe play
asks what remains when history is erased\, and whether memory can become
 an act of resistance.

DESCRIPTION:Goonj ka Ghar\nLanguage: Hindi (with subtitles in English)\nPro
 duction co-ordinated by: Sanyukta Saha\nAbout the Performance:\nGoonj ka G
har is a physical theatre performance that combines movement\, minimal set
design\, and fragmented storytelling to explore themes of identity\, powe
r\, and marginalisation. Initially inspired by three seminal short stories
\, Tirichh by Uday Prakash\, Toba Tek Singh by Saadat Hasan Manto\, and U
ljhan by Vijaydan Detha\, which are woven into a single theatrical narrat
ive that interrogates unresolved questions of identity\, belonging and jus
tice in today’s world.\nSet against the backdrop of a society grappling
with citizenship\, identity and social justice\, the performance raises ur
gent questions: What makes a person a citizen? What do we call home when b
orders both physical and psychological remain in flux? Who is considered s
ane\, worthy\, beautiful\, or legitimate? Why does society continue to val
ue women who appear silent and submissive? Each segment reflects marginali
sation through a distinct lens — surreal satire on madness and displacem
ent\, dark allegory on invisibility and class\, and an introspective explo
ration of gender\, self-worth and systemic injustice.\nFor enquiries pleas

DESCRIPTION:How Not to Build a Theatre Institution\nA Conversation with Abh

Varma\nArtists establish and lead theatre institutions (which include long
-standing initiatives) for different reasons — to practice\, teach\, pre
sent\, advocate or support the art form\, for instance.\nBut such undertak
ings\, especially if they function independently of secure government or c
orporate largesse\, can falter or fail. The poverty of infrastructure and
support for the theatre are among the external factors that are adduced fo
r the precariousness of artist-led institutions. Internal factors are rare
ly cited. What if the institution is over-reliant on personal equations an
d goodwill for its sustenance? Or if its ownership is narrowly concentrate
d in one or two charismatic personalities? Or if it is too obsessed with l
egacy concerns to avert obsolescence in a swiftly changing environment?\nT
his session will investigate what might lie inside any theatre institutio
n that could threaten its stability and hamper its growth. Reflecting on t
heir personal experience of founding and running institutions\, three thea
tre artists will tell us about what worked or did not work about the choic
es they made. Were discontents allowed to simmer\, tensions swept under th
e carpet or challenges left unaddressed? In hindsight\, do they regret any
missteps or wish they had done some things differently?\nFor enquiries pl

DESCRIPTION:Kadambari: Tracing Fragments of a Shattered Muse\nLanguage: Hin
di\, Bengali\nWritten and directed by: Meghna Roy Choudhury\nKadambari is
a lyrical theatrical journey into the silenced life of Kadambari Devi\, Ra
 bindranath Tagore’s critic\, muse\, companion\, and sister-in-law\, marr
ied into the Tagore household at nine and gone by 25\, when the poet himse
lf was only 23. Rather than reducing her to a footnote in his biography\,
the play seeks to restore her voice\, weaving memory\, fiction and imagina
tion. It traces fragments of her existence beyond whispers of scandal and
tragedy\, asking how history chooses to remember or erase the women who st
and behind celebrated men.\nSet during her final hours\, the play imagines
Death arriving to claim her. In this liminal space\, Kadambari confronts
Rabi with unresolved questions of love\, freedom\, and erasure. Their dial
ogue moves between the personal and the poetic\, intertwining childhood me
mories\, moments of intimacy\, and echoes of Tagore’s fictional heroines
who carry her shadow.\nKadambari won the award for Best Actor in a Suppor

DESCRIPTION:Tradition and Modernity in Contemporary Theatre\nA Conversation

performances\, art and craft objects and practices\, festivals and rituals
\, cuisine\, inherited knowledge and skills\, and much else besides. At th
e same time\, the distinction between the traditional and the modern is no
t clearcut. Modern theatre in India has a history that stretches back for
over two centuries — long enough to develop its own traditions. Dance fo
rms now regarded as ‘classical’ acquired modern practices of teaching\

his session will speak about their idea of tradition and how they have int
eracted with it in the plays they have written\, directed or performed. Th

me to the fore when tradition is brought into contemporary theatre work. H

DESCRIPTION:Full Frontal\nLanguage: English\nCo-created by: Abhay Mahajan a
nd Sharanya Ramprakash\nPerformed by: Abhay Mahajan\nAbout the Performance
:\nEnter Vinod. He is a man’s man. He is an actor. He is a lover. He is
a delight. His gift is that he does not merely play a role — he becomes
the role. Today\, he is here to audition for perhaps his most difficult ro
 le yet: “A Feminist Man”.\nOver the course of a 60-minute audition\, g
uided by a disembodied voice — part director\, part conscience\, part so
cietal echo — Vinod navigates the full range of his performative self. A
 s memory\, desire\, myth\, cinema and conditioning collide\, the audition
room becomes a space where masculinity is continuously performed\, interro
gated and disrupted.\nIs a feminist man simply another role to master? Or
is it something deeper\, messier and impossible to fully perform? Blending
  humour\, discomfort\, role-play and self-examination\, Full Frontal asks
: what does it mean to be a man in India today?\nFor enquiries please cont

DESCRIPTION:Ritu Raga Rang: Seasons through Ragas\nThe world of Hindustani
classical music has been traditionally linked to the idea of seasons. Anci
ent Indian scriptures described six distinct seasons or ritus: Vasant (Spr
 ing)\, Grishma (summer)\, Varsha (monsoon)\, Sharad (Autumn)\, Hemant (Pre
-Winter) and Shishir (Winter). Each of these seasons bring about different
moods and feelings. In this multi-sensory performance\, which includes Ra
gamala paintings and fragrances that evoke the feelings of each season\, N
ishant will paint portraits of the ritus using ragas and compositions as a
canvas. This programme premiered at Stanford University to a warm recepti
on and now comes to Bengaluru for the first time.\nAbout the artist\nNisha
