DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the first set of screenings of 'From Monochrome to M
odernity'!This is a collaboration of The Parallel Cinema Club\, Daijoubu e
Sports and Japan Habba to bring to everyone the rich cinematic culture of
Japan. Through curated films from the likes of Kurosawa and Teshigahara\,
we span through 120 years of Japanese cinema's vibrant richness. The first
set of films will look at the Golden Age of Japanese Cinema.About the peri
od: The Golden Age of Japanese cinema\, usually dated to the 1950s\, early
1960s\, grew from a prewar studio system reshaped by postwar Occupation r
eforms. Rashomon’s 1951 Venice win opened Western markets and brought Ku
 rosawa\, Ozu\, Mizoguchi\, and Naruse global acclaim\, while the late-1950
s peak of major studios\, huge attendance\, and widescreen/color gave way
in the 1960s to television\, studio crises\, and changing audiences. Forma
 lly\, it was a studio-genre synthesis\, jidaigeki\, gendai-geki\, shominge
ki\, and melodrama using classical continuity with strong mise-en-scène\,
long takes\, and expressive sound\, with key styles including Ozu’s low
static “tatami” camera and pillow shots\, Mizoguchi’s long moving t
 akes\, Kurosawa’s dynamic montage and telephoto action\, and Naruse’s
 restrained\, elliptical melodrama.Films to be screened:Floating Weeds by Y
asujirō Ozu Ikiru by Akira KurosawaWife! Be Like a Rose! by Mikio NaruseT
his is a free screening\, with breaks after each film. For more details ab

DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the second set of screenings of 'From Monochrome to
Modernity'!This is a collaboration of The Parallel Cinema Club\, Daijoubu
eSports and Japan Habba to bring to everyone the rich cinematic culture of
Japan. Through curated films from the likes of Kurosawa and Teshigahara\,
we span through 120 years of Japanese cinema's vibrant richness. The secon
d set of films will look at the The Japanese New Wave.About the period: Th
e Japanese New Wave (Nuberu Bagu) emerged in the late 1950s–1960s as you
nger directors reacted against the studio system’s commercial formulas a
nd the older Golden Age masters. Led by figures such as Nagisa Oshima\, Sh
ohei Imamura\, Yoshishige Yoshida\, Masahiro Shinoda\, and Hiroshi Teshiga
hara\, it engaged with politics\, youth alienation\, sexuality\, and socia
l taboos. Formally it broke with classical continuity\, favoring handheld
 cameras\, jump cuts\, improvisation\, documentary-like textures\, and self
-reflexive experimentation. Its energy was tied to postwar protest culture
and independent production\, often challenging both Japanese society and
cinematic convention.Films to be screened:Face of Another by Hiroshi Teshi
gahara Death by Hanging by Nagisa ŌshimaDemons by Toshio MatsumotoThis is
a free screening\, with breaks after each film. For more details about th
e curation itself\, you can go here: Curation for Japan HabbaPlease note t
hat there are a total of 4 entry passes to this event\, and you can either
RSVP for select films or all the films. Please be sure to show up early b
ecause the seats are not going to be reserved for anyone. The RSVP form is
  just for our headcount reference.

DESCRIPTION:The ostensible subject of this film is the growing\, drying\, p

ama. The inhabitants explain that it is the perfect combination of earth\,
wind and rain that makes their village’s persimmons superior to those g
rown anywhere else\, including the village just a few miles away. The film
